March 23rd- Italy’s Easter Sunday
March 23rd- Florence-specific event called "Scoppio del Carro" (Explosion of the Cart). This event involves the burning/ explosion of a wooden cart, fireworks, etc and is carried out today relating back to the First Crusade.
March 24th- Italian Easter Monday- buses, trains, etc may run less frequently, and some places may be closed

April 25th- Italian holiday of Liberation Day- again buses, trains, etc may run less frequently, and some places may be closed
April 26th-June 01- Maggio Fiorentino- aka Florence’s Music Festival

May 01- Labor Day - buses, trains, etc may run less frequently, and some places may be closed
May 17th- Cricket Festival Held each year in Florence (most children purchase small cages ten hunt for crickets, though they can also be purchased), includes food, entertainment, lives music, etc and is held in Florence’s Cascine Park. At the end of the festical the crickets are freed which is supposed to bring good luck.

June 24th-27th- Costume di Calcio/ Calcio Fiorentino- (famous costumed soccer match) This soccer game is held yearly in Santa Croce (very near most of our apartments!) a medieval soccer match played entirely in traditional medieval costume. You can inquire at Tourist Information shops to find out where to purchase tickets.

Last Sunday in June- Gioco del Ponte (Battle of the Bridge)- this is yet another medieval festival, but held just outside of Florence in Pisa
Late June-early Sept- Florence begins what is called their outdoor cinema season, showing various contemporary films

Aug 16th- Il Palio (Medieval Horse Race) in Siena. This less-than-traditional horse race is held in Siena’s town square. This bareback horse race is one of the most exciting and intense spectacles going and known world-round. If you are in Florence (or Tuscany) this event is truly a must-see! Tickets not necessary to watch from the ground though tickets can be purchased to observe from square-overlooking balconies- and as such the best view). If you opt to watch from the square, street-view we highly suggest an early start if you expect to get anywhere near the race, as there is nearly a full day worth of processions before-the-fact (includes parade with flag-bearers, music, etc) and the square is always extremely crowded with on-lookers!

First week of Sept- Festa della Rificolona (Rificolone= paper lanterns) in Florence, dates back to the age of the Renaissance. Rificolona is a children’s event which includes a parade, street performances and the main “act” is the children’s march along the river with lanterns (often home-made and brightly colored).

Nov 01- All Saints' Day in Italy- buses, trains, etc may run less frequently, and some places may be closed
Nov- “Musica dei Popoli” Festival in Florence is a large ethnic and folk music festival, originated in 1979. Artists are invited from all over the world with the purpose of expanding and sharing the musical cultures throughout the world (300-350 artists, from 85+ nations!).

Dec 8th- Italy-wide religious festival born in 1854 (celebrated as a holy day) called Feast of the Immaculate Conception, commemorating the Immaculate Conception of Mary.
Dec 25th- Christmas Day in Italy- buses, trains, etc may run less frequently, and some places may be closed
Dec 26th- St. Stephen's Day in Italy- buses, trains, etc may run less frequently, and some places may be closed
