Day Four, Five or more in Florence:
If you are fortunate enough to get to spend 4+ days in Florence we suggest taking in some of the surrounding Tuscan cities. Both Pisa and Siena can be done in half a day easily and both are highly recommended. Siena is a small medieval town, with a feel like no other. Its subtle charm leaves you wanting more for no reason easily explained. Pisa is much like a miniature Florence however with the famous leaning tower added to the mix.
Siena is most easily reached by bus (about 1.5- 2 hours from Florence) which can be caught at the SITA bus station located very close to the central train station (Santa Maria Novella). Tickets can be purchased through the SITA box office and run about 6 EUR 50 per ticket (therefore approx 12 EUR 50 per person, round trip).
The easiest way to reach Pisa is by train (going to Pisa station called Pisa Centrale). You can purchase tickets easily from ticket counter or self-service machine at the Santa Maria Novella Station. (To note: 9 times out of 10 Pisa Centrale station will merely be one of the train stops en-route to another destination so when looking for the ‘binario’ from which your train leaves. Pay attention to the final destination of the train as this will be the one listed- not ‘Pisa’ as an end point. The large ‘Arrival’ and ‘Departure’ boards at the end of most binarios can be very useful to look up binario #’s by the departure time (and destination obviously) as this is standard from day to day. There is also no announcement when the train makes each short stop along the route so be sure to pay attention to the arrival time and exit the train when you see the Pisa Centrale signs.) To check running times before reaching the train station you can look up this information on www.trenitalia.com, round trip tickets will cost somewhere around 12 EUR per person for a round trip.
Alternative, close cities/ regions worth visiting for day trips are San Gimignano, Lucca, Cinque Terre and the Chianti Hills (day wine tours highly recommended, and can be booked online). In the summer if you are looking for the best beaches head to Rosignano, located approx 1.5 hrs from Florence by train.
