DAY THREE IN FLORENCE:
The majority of our apartments are very near to Piazza Santa Croce, so let’s start out this morning out in this square. Be sure to take in the beauty of the Santa Croce Church (closed until 13:00pm on Sundays) while here after stopping into one of the Piazza café’s for a Panini or pastry, a coffee and a good start to your day. From Piazza Santa Croce walk on to the beautiful Piazza della Repubblica. This bustling square is sure to be full of people at any time of year, and you have to have a look at one of the most randomly-placed merry-go-rounds in the world! This beautiful merry-go-round is open for the children (and the children-at-heart) year round. Do not forget to stop into Gilli (small coffee shop with outdoor seating) right in the Piazza Repubblica square. Gilli is known for their amazing hot chocolate, pastries and highly praised seafood risotto (if you planning to eat here as well!). This is a great munch location for those who choose to do come shopping in the area before settling in for lunch.
From here head toward the Arno and stroll down Via Tornabuoni, and check out Florence’s luxury shopping district (including La Perla, Gucci, Louis Vuitton, etc). After getting your fill of window shopping, walk along the Arno towards the Ponte Vecchio (about three bridges from where you will come out).
Since you should still have a good part of your day left at this point, if you are up for the walk, cross the Ponte Vecchio and head into the hills towards Piazzale Michelangelo. Again, this is the square up in the hills of Florence over-looking the entire city. Although it is about a 2.5km walk from the Ponte Vecchio it is well worth the walk when you arrive. If you are lucky enough to catch sunset from Piazzale Michelangelo it will not be something you will soon forget. Dependent on the season there is a restaurant- Osteria Antica Mescita (located specifically on Via San Niccolo) to eat dinner, or Fuori Porta is located at the old city walls and is a great spot to sip great wine and unwind from the day.
