Italy Turns 150!

Well at least as a unified country…

Italy Turns 150!
Italy’s history is a great one and goes back much further than the 150-year celebration of its unification. It was in 1861 in Turin that national unity was proclaimed, uniting the many states on the Italian peninsula into one country.

Celebrations will take place throughout Italy during all of 2011, but kick off this Thursday, March 17, the officially recognized day on which the unification became official. The largest celebrations will take place in Italy’s three capital cities: Rome, Florence and Turin. Turin was the capital in 1861 until moved to Florence in 1865. It stayed there for 6 years before finally moving to Rome when the unification was complete.

Celebrations include national holidays, sporting events, concerts, fireworks celebrations, special art and culture exhibits, cultural fairs and markets and much more.
