Sagra della castagna di Marradi in October
Also this October in Marradi, gem in the middle of the wonderful Mugello country, there will be the famous “Sagra della Castagna” or the Festival of Chestnuts on the Sundays 9th, 16th, 23rd e 30th. The Marradi chestnuts are known all over the world, they are a particular type of chestnut very tasty, creamy and sweet called “Marroni” that are exported to countries like France where in Paris under the expert hands of the maitre patisserier they become the bespoken and delicious “Marron Glacé”. Spending a Sunday in Marradi in October is the perfect occasion not only to taste the chestnuts in all their varieties including a number of absolutely divine recipes chestnut-based like tortelli di marroni (homemade pasta filled with chestnut cream), la torta di marroni (marroni cake), il castagnaccio (mix of chestnut sweet wheat with water and raisins cooked in the oven with rosemary and pinenuts on the top), marroni jams, marrons glacés and the “bruciate or caldarroste” (chestnuts baked on the direct fire of a grill) but to experience also a sort of trip into the step if you can join the Special Old Steam Train that starts from the Florence Main Station Firenze S. M. Novella to go through the hills that lead to the romantic little town. This a one-day excursion both for families that can enjoy the excitement of their kids travelling on the old steam train or for a romantic day out of Florence in the enchanted surrounding of the country of Tuscany.
