How to Get to Florence

One suggestion on how to navigate your way through your Italian vacation

How to Get to Florence
We have written about the various methods of getting to Florence and getting around town in the past, but after speaking to a guest today, I thought it would be nice to share his experience.

First of all, to get to Florence, most travelers fly into Rome, Milan, Pisa or Florence itself. Rome is the most common as it has direct flights to many major cities. Flying directly into Florence usually requires a stop or two along the way. The benefit is that once you land, you’re here. You can hop in a cab and be at your apartment rental within 20 minutes.

Most people, however, seem to fly into Rome planning on spending a few days there either at the beginning or end of their trip. That itself is a benefit. A downside of landing in Roma if you’re hoping to go straight to Florence, is that after your flight, you have to take the train, which adds another two hours of travel to the itinerary. BUT it is doable and it’s not too difficult to manage. (We can help you with train schedules if you need.)

The guest I spoke to today offered up great advice, however, about hiring a car service. He is traveling with his wife and kids and decided to hire a car at the beginning to get them and their bags from the airport to the apartment. He enjoyed the ease of it so much that throughout his month stay, has gone back to the car service company for day trips and toting his family out and about. I love this advice rather than renting a car because Florence is an absolute nightmare to drive in. The center is blocked unless you have a special permit and even the perimeter is a maze of one-way streets and no traffic areas. I know one man who had rented a car in Florence and four years later is still getting notifications in the mail from Italy about 10 traffic violations he committed totaling more than 1000 Euro.

Hiring a car service is easy and can offer competitive prices because there are so many companies throughout Italy. We work with a few preferred vendors and negotiating prices and making reservations is part of our extra concierge services we offer.

So don’t feel like planes and trains? Let us help you secure a driver to get you around – making your vacation that much easier!

Pisa airport has a regular 3 minute train service to Pisa Centrale and then its around an hour to Firenze Santa Maria Novella. These run around every 20 minutes during the day - really easy! Many of the budget airlines fly direct to Pisa too!
