Some tips to plan your family vacation
If you are planning a visit to Florence, it is good to know that whatever is the period of the year, the city welcome and delight the kids with no space to be bored!
When you decide for a family vacation the first thinking is about to find a good compromise between what to do in the place you are visiting from an adult perspective like museums or exhibitions to understand the history of the place you are visiting, shopping to remember your vacation, restaurants or festivals where to taste the local food and be delighted by the flavours and atmosphere of a different country. On the other hand, the concern is: “will my children have fun?” so that they can be nice and quiet to allow us to have a great time?
Well, the answer is Yes Florence is a good choice!
To start we have to say that, not only Florence but Italy is a children friendly country, all the people will be smiling at your kids, probably saying “Ciao” each time you will enter a place with your little ones. Italian food gives you such a wide choice of flavours that we dare you to find something your children will not like, just think about the artisanal ice-cream! You can find an ice-cream at each corner of the city and they are all very good, of course we could recommend a couple of places that are the top of the range like Gelateria Vivoli in the center or Gelateria Badiani close to the stadium. And if it is too cold for ice-cream, there are plenty of cafeterias where to have a super thick hot chocolate with cream, there is no age for such a treat! And if are more for a savoury taste, the Italian “focaccia” is what you need; go to Focacceria Pugi in San Marco place and you will be immediately called by the mouth-watering scent coming from inside the shop.
Coming to the cultural side, yes museums could be boring for kids, but the deal with your child could be to be nice and quiet while you admire the masterpieces of the Uffizi Gallery, understanding why the Stendhal Syndrome was born here, and then, later, to bring your little ones to the National History Museum and its section La Specola (the oldest scientific museum of Europe) to admire the huge collection of fossils and animals. Sometimes they organise activities for kids like interactive laboratories, you just have to check the relevant website to see what is planned and the timing. As an alternative for the little ones is having a ride on the horses of the ancient Carousel in the Repubblica Place and then, as a treat for you adults, to have a coffee or tea in one of the cafeterias in the same place.
Shopping is always something very attractive and Florence has a lot of very famous Italian branded shops like Gucci, Ferragamo or Armani and many shops where you can find whatever you like from clothes to accessories or shoes of different Italian and international brands, but don’t miss the occasion to have a look to the artisanal “botteghe” (small shops) where you can find fantastic hand-made shoes or bags and for your little-ones toys as were done in the old times, all made in wood and hand-painted like in Bartolucci in via della Condotta.
Is this not enough? From end of November in Piazza Santa Croce there will be the traditional Christmas market with amazing stalls where you can buy Christmas decorations, meet Santa Klaus (Babbo Natale in Italian) or simply enjoy a cup of mulled wine having in front of you one of the most beautiful churches of Florence, Santa Croce with its marble façade.
