An Easter Tradition at the Duomo

Easter in Florence
One of my favorite things about living abroad is discovering new traditions and celebrations for various holidays. When I started to think about Easter coming up, I envisioned my beloved Easter bunny hopping across the Ponte Vecchio and hiding colorful eggs for me to find as I walk across the Arno.

Nope! Think again. Italians don't do the whole egg and bunny show that is makes my my Easter morning. Instead, in Florence you can catch the show of a different animal at the Duomo - the dove. In the Piazza of Santa Maria del Fiore, you can witness the announcing of the resurrection of the Lord with a tradition cart that is wheeled in front of the Duomo bursting into sparks and sending a dove-shaped firework flying into the doors of the cathedral. With onlookers and Florentine flag bearers dressed in traditional costume, this site just might start a new tradition for you.

Planning a trip to Florence for Easter (Sunday, April 24)? We have plenty of places for you to stay if so!
