Cobblestones and Eye Contact

Beautiful things – buildings, monuments, Italians…are a part of the life and culture in the historic Florence city center. Unfortunately so are cobblestones…

Cobblestones and Eye Contact
When you walk down the beautiful cobblestone streets, you are often transported back to the 1500s - imagining yourself walking down the same streets that the Medicis, Michelango or Dante walked down during the height of the Italian Renaissance. However, you are also surrounded by historic buildings, gorgeous shops and exciting sights and sounds, which often distract your attentions away from the loose cobblestones under your feet.

There have been numerous occasions that while walking down the street, I have been on my iPod or starting up at the Duomo in front of me and not been looking where I was stepping. Too often I have been caught up in the beauty of someone passing by and distracted from the task at hand: step… step… step… These amateur moves have led to trips, stumbles, falls, twisted ankles and bruised pride. The cobblestones require eyes down and full attention to make it down a single city block.

Here is my recommendation to you: 1. Wear sturdy shoes – something with a flat sole that provide you balance and surety of step. While heels are always lovely and very much appreciated in this fashionable city, they are dangerous. 2. Take a seat! I’m not saying not to enjoy the view as you walk around, but do be careful. And preferably, take a seat at in Piazza della Repubblica with a cappuccino and take in the sights and sounds. What’s the rush anyway?
Luckily with our centrally-located apartments, you don’t have to walk too far anyway!

I totally agree, while in Firenze in Jan 11,I fell as I was stepping on to a road and landed face down on both knees, many kind people rushed to my aid, while I had very badly bruised knees my pride was also badly bruised, I even had sensible shoes on !!
