The number of events is numerous and hard to keep up with all of them. But basically you can choose from 2 different types of events.
The end of the year is always a time to celebrate. Il Capodanno (the italian New Year’s eve) is, as everywhere else in the world, a special moment of the year and it means party! Everyone eats well and only a few really care about how much they have drunk. In Florence is not different.
The number of events is numerous and hard to keep up with all of them. But basically you can choose from 2 different types of events.
The first one is the open-for-the-public kind of event. It takes place in the public (and open) spaces of the city - like the beautiful squares in the city center - and can be organized by the public authorities or it’s simply a result of a gathering of people celebrating the date. This is a more popular sort of manifestation and equally matches the private parties in terms of celebrating the new year. The most positive perspective of these public events is that you are always free to leave as you please and head to another party elsewhere at anytime. Within the city center everything is walking distance and it will be no problem to move around. As it’s winter time, is always well advisable to dress up properly - not necessarily in a formal way, but comfortably warm.
The private parties, on the other hand, can be celebrated in hotels, restaurants, night clubs, old palaces or villas. It obviously has the exclusive characteristic involved, as every private party. However, choosing the right one might be a tough task. If you are married, with children under 12 - for example - you might don’t want to face a six-hour-long party crowded with young people under 20’s. Dress code is also something to pay attention to. Some of them may require a formal dressing. So, reading the specifications of each party is very important to not have a bad experience. No one desires that for the first day of the year.
These private parties are characterized by having a dinner and party afterwards. Depending on the place you will be at you can eat and drink as much as you want, or you can eat what they have specified on the menu and pay extra for the drinks. It differs from one to another, but essentially is this.
